we’re making waves on Our Side.

Project Pillars

As part of the reimagining project, we are focusing our efforts on four key strategic priorities. These priorities will help us to increase our capacity and offerings, providing greater economic prosperity, revitalization and essential supports to the people and communities we serve. They will also establish Alderney Landing as a gateway for the world to experience and be inspired by our unique and diverse Dartmouth community. Learn about each project priority below.

expand the farmers market

Expand the Farmers Market and the ability for Alderney Landing to be an incubation space for local small business.

Located on the ground floor of Alderney Landing, The Norman Newman Market is open to the public seven days per/week. Over the past two decades, the market has become an incubator for ideas and new ventures in the arts and cultural industry. We’ve watched small businesses thrive time and time again, expanding from a small market booth to their own brick-and-mortar destinations, including Humble Pie Kitchen, Brightwood Brewery, Two if by Sea, Birdie’s Bread Co., Maria’s Pantry, New Scotland Brewing Co. and others. As part of the reimagining project, our goal is to expand the farmers market, allowing even more economic impact and support of the small businesses that help create a unique tapestry of offerings within Downtown Dartmouth.

showcase culture and diversity

Expand Alderney Landing’s ability to showcase culture and diversity through performance and art.

As a cultural centre, celebrating culture and diversity has always been an important part of our fabric. For the past 25 years, we have brought together and positively impacted all ages, genders, income levels, races and cultures. We are working to break down systemic racism by being a space where community building and dialogue takes place for Black and African Nova Scotians, Indigenous peoples and newcomers. We provide physical, creative and social opportunities for young people of all cultures in an inclusive, safe environment. And we celebrate all cultures through spirited events such as Sunday Cultural Days, Multicultural Festival and more. A reimagined Alderney Landing will enhance this integral work, providing new spaces and places for growth and inclusion.

expand our capacity

Expand Alderney Landing’s capacity to host large-scale events with a specific focus on family and youth-friendly events.

When it comes to events, we have so much to offer. Our open, green space is one of the last in HRM, with many events taking place in our outdoor space, including outstanding must-see concerts and events. We love showcasing major headliners and have been thrilled to bring the likes of April Wine, Tom Cochrane and more to the stage. We are also known for bringing up-and-coming artists to the forefront, including Rihanna, Sam Roberts, July Talk, the Arkells, Hey Rosetta!, Broken Social Scene, Joel Plaskett, Billy Talent, Sloan and more. Inside our space, we are the permanent home of the ANS Music Awards, introducing artists and playwrights to the world, and support many important organizations, including the Canadian Mental Health Association, the Dartmouth Visual Arts Society, free art cart programming and Nocturne through the Craig Gallery. To achieve our goal of continuing to host these large-scale, unique and meaningful events, our plan is to expand our capacity, bringing Downtown Dartmouth to the global stage.

be the anchor

Vision to be the anchor of a larger Downtown Dartmouth Waterfront Improvement Plan.

Positioned as a central location on the Dartmouth Waterfront, Alderney Landing and contributes directly to its impact. Access to the ocean, views of Halifax and ocean shipping activity is part of the charm of Alderney Landing and contributes directly to our impact. Direct ferry access makes our centre a hub for people visiting Halifax from the Eastern Shore. It also welcomes those from across the harbour to experience everything Downtown Dartmouth has to offer easily.

Backed by a 2022 Economic and Social Impact Report, Alderney Landing contributes an increase of $36.4 million in provincial output (GDP), a total increase in labour income of $16.2 million and a total increase in employment of 715. Knowing these significant contributions, it is our vision to be a lead contributor and partner when it comes to the Downtown Dartmouth Waterfront Improvement Plan.
